Reliable motor powers industrial blower

Lafert's Progressive motors are designed to give engineers more power for weight/size than similarly sized IEC machines. The EP10 industrial blower from Air Control Industries has a blower head that is cast and machined as a single piece with equally spaced bearings configured to provide even loading from the belt drive. This allows the belt to be run at much lower tension, resulting in significantly reduced loads on all parts of the assembly. It is used in the company's own bottle and can drying systems, which are installed in breweries and soft drinks plants around the world. The blower uses the Progressive motor from Lafert.Lafert's Progressive motors are designed to give engineers more power for weight/size than similarly sized IEC machines. This is particularly beneficial for ACI's bottle and can drying application because it helps to reduce the foot print of the dryer without impairing the blower's efficiency."The Lafert motors help us to achieve our customers' bottle and can drying needs while minimising the space required, which is always at a premium" said Jason Bean, ACI's Manufacturing Director.

"This is complemented by the reassurance to our customers that being an international company, Lafert can provide a prompt backup response in most places around the world".ACI uses both 2 pole 11 and 15kW Progressive motors in a 132 frame size. These have similar outputs as 160 IEC machines.Lafert Progressive motors are available as two, four and six-pole units.Two-pole motors are available in frame sizes from 63 to 180 with powers up to 30kW; four-pole units come with frame sizes of 63 to 250 with ratings up to 75kW and six pole machines come in sizes of 100 to 132 and 7.5kW ratings. The increased output from the motors is made possible by extending the internal lamination pack and building in more active material. Some of the motors use the class F temperature rise available from class F insulation. The multivoltage input of 380-420V 50Hz/440-480V 60Hz is unaffected.

Remarkable performance from multi stage blower

The latest in Air Control Industries' unique range of multi stage blowers is a new backward bladed centrifugal blower capable of delivering up to 90" wg static pressure of 100cfm volumetric flow. The latest in Air Control Industries' unique range of multi stage blowers for the process and manufacturing industries is a new backward bladed centrifugal blower capable of delivering up to 90" wg static pressure of 100cfm volumetric flow.At a typical 60"wg, the new 9MS11 blower delivers a remarkable 50cfm (approximately 85m3/hr) yet draws only 6.5A motor current for its 230V, 3Ph, 80Hz motor. The supply voltage into the inverter is 240V 1Ph 50-Hz from a 13A ring main.

The ACI range of direct driven multi stage blowers provides quiet, maintenance free solutions for many of the higher pressure applications in industry, such as airknife installations, pneumatic conveying and vacuum tables.Direct mounting of the impellers and low motor speeds produce minimal noise levels as well as high pressure performance.OEM buyers find that the modualr nature of the multi stage range helps provide design flexibility, since designers have a wide choice of the number of stages in a given blower and can also select from a wide range of power supply requirements.A ket difference between ACI and other manufacturers, they say, is the willingness of the ACI design and applications engineering teams to provide custom-built solutions to specific problems.Drawing on a product range spanning centrifugal, slimline, compact, multi stage, axial and safety fans and including advanced airknife and drying systems, ACI designs and supplies unique air movement systems to provide the most cost-effective solutions.

80% more air flow with static pressure blower

EAO, representatives of Sanyo Denki has launched what it claims is the industry's highest air flow and static pressure 97mm blower in the market today, the San Ace B97.With a maximum air flow of 1.37m 3 /min and a maximum static pressure of 760 pa, the San Ace B97 blower delivers an over 80% improvement in air flow and a 270% improvement in static pressure, compared to previous models. The San Ace B97 blower delivers the best cooling performance in the industry for DC blowers in this frame size.It is available in 12 or 24 volt operation and has life expectancy of over 4 years continuous operation, and a fan failure alarm available as standard. With devices becoming more densely packaged, high static pressure cooling requirements are an ever increasing must for thermal engineers.

Axial fans do not commonly provide the static pressure performance required due to their fundamental design. The advantage of the Sanyo Denki blower product range is that it has as many as 30 to 80 blades, far exceeding the three to thirteen blades found in axial fans. The extra blades allow a blower to gain a bigger static pressure than an axial fan.The large static pressure makes blowers suitable for cooling devices that have high packaging densities and strong back pressure resistance.Devices such as servers, power supplies, storage devices and communication products can all benefit from this new product.

Cutet soil and drainage pipe cutter

The innovative Cutet soil and drainage pipe cutter, devised and marketed by Cutting Edge Technology, represents a fresh direction for process automation specialists Barr and Paatz.Rather than utilising its cutting-edge 3D engineering analysis and CAD/CAM tools for configuring automated workcells, in this instance it has optimised the design of the product itself, eliminating excess weight, complexity and cost, produced the prototype in just ten days and is now assembling the cutters at its Totnes, Devon premises.Launched earlier this year, the Cutet is designed to cut PVCu pipe commonly used for soil drains, vent pipes, storm water and drainage systems, using a standard cordless drill as a power source, and is set to revolutionise groundwork engineering. Not only is it faster, more convenient and reliable than rival pipe cutters, it virtually eliminates the risk of leaking pipes, by delivering a high level of precision cutting, and puts the operator literally at an arm's length from the contents of a 'live' sewage pipe.

This has significant health and safety implications, since leakages can give rise to serious environmental problems, as witnessed by the source of the latest foot and mouth outbreak, and because sewage workers and utility contractors are at risk from Weil's disease, a potentially fatal illness often associated with drainage systems and pipeworks.Founder and Chief Executive of Cutting Edge Technology, Ben Shepherd, who numbers Welsh philanthropist Sir Stanley Thomas OBE and rugby legend Gareth Edwards CBE amongst his fellow directors, had ample practical experience of sewer and drainage pipes on his farm, as well as a major property restoration project and an industrial development, so felt there must be a better, more accurate way of cutting PVC pipe, especially one that avoided intimate contact with the 'live' contents! Having sketched down some ideas, he carved the basic design from a solid block of polystyrene and recruited a local engineering firm to design and build the product.Unfortunately, these early units suffered from poor reliability and high manufacturing costs so, through his network of contacts, Ben got in touch with Barr and Paatz. After an intensive programme of remedial work to meet the deadline for the product debut at a major trade show only two weeks away, the Totnes firm then recommended a total redesign, since the original was heavy, complex in design, cumbersome in operation and potentially unsafe.

3D modelling cuts CAD time for offshore drilling

3D Modelling Decreases CAD Time for North Sea Drilling System by half
By creating a 3D model of the Snorre B RamRig, Aker Maritime's Norwegian subsidiary, Maritime Hydraulics, completed the CAD design in 50 percent less time than if they had used 2D CAD.And when the rig was assembled, there were practically no clashes - an unlikely occurrence when a large project such as this is done in 2D.Instead of designing the various components of the rig separately and documenting them on a series of 2D drawings, engineers created a 3D model of the entire system, including piping, structural, architectural, electrical, HVAC, and mechanical components. When they needed to make changes to the design, they did so on the 3D model instead of modifying individual drawings. After the design was finalized, fabrication drawings were generated automatically from the 3D model. The time that was saved on this project was the result of several factors, such as the ease of making changes on the 3D model versus revising drawings by hand, and the speed of generating isometrics automatically.

The lack of clashes was the result of the superior visualization that 3D modelling provides as well as the ability to include components from all design disciplines into one model.Aker Maritime manufactures a wide range of both conventional and state-of-the art offshore equipment and modules. The Norwegian subsidiary, Maritime Hydraulics AS based in Kristiansand, has a worldwide network of branch offices with capacity for manufacturing and service support for both offshore and onshore drilling systems. This company's product range includes both conventional drilling machinery, coiled tubing, and the advanced, automated RamRig drilling system. The RamRig is a highly flexible concept for drilling and workover packages that can be used for both fixed and floating installations. It is available as single, double or triple stand rigs with capacities ranging from 150 to 1000 tons.
